Stereotypes

Do you think that advertisers have a moral duty to avoid stereotyping people?

I believe that they DO have a moral duty. First of all,  with the development of the technology and communication, the world has become a place where everyone connects neglecting time and space. This is called a ubiquitous society. In the center, there has always been the mass media, manipulating how people think and feel about certain groups in society. Advertisements, which are typically common in the mass media, also contribute to this as they in many cases undermine a certain group in return to support the other;this is often displayed in a form of stereotyping. Stereotyping, unlike many other forms, isn't considered to be very offensive towards the undermined group.  This is because advertisers adroitly use 'appeal to humor' when employing stereotypes. However, people should not fail to recognize the consequences that these advertisements can lead up to, as the consequences might not be manageable in the future. These stereotypes displayed in the mass media can turn into reality.

A single advertisement can incorporate so many stereotypes that it almost may be able to attack every single different group.  Though not the best example, the Mountain Dew advertisement made by Tyler show how an advertisement can include different stereotypes of different groups and people's reactions in response reveal why advertisements should take moral duties into account. Explicitly, the advertisement features both racial and sexual stereotypes.  Racial stereotype is displayed through ways in which black people were portrayed: gangsters and criminals. Moreover, these black people are displayed on par with an animal whereas the whites are presented as rather wealthy and money-oriented. In return, customers and critics condemned the advertisement for its biased and inappropriate portrayal of stereotypes of certain groups. A scholar even described this advertisement as 'disgusting'. Later on, as the number of critics increased to a point where Mountain Dew's revenue decreased, Mountain Dew officially announced its apology and the advertisement was permanently deleted.

If a company cannot appeal to its customers, how is it going to persuade them to buy its products?  If the advertiser wants to aim towards a particular group, like how the Mountain Dew advertisement targeted towards the whites, he/she should be well aware of the moral line-which includes avoiding stereotyping- he/she should not cross over, as  encroaching upon this only brings about disadvantages to not only the advertiser and its company but also the group displayed in the advertisement.

Print Advertisement

The ad we received was mainly purposed to advertise the US army and recruit more soldiers. However, the purpose of this advertisement can be furthered explored through thorough scrutiny. The way in which the Ad reveals is very significant in terms of its techniques and portrayal of its components.

First of all,  there is a man that's delineated  as a heroic figure jumping over a gap between two rocks, which shows a contrast of two very powerful colors: Black and white/orange. In this case, the black represents the dark past the man gone through. On the other hand, the white/orange symbolizes the bright future the man 'will' go through. By establishing this dramatic contrast, the white/orange is emphasized, putting a greater emphasis on the bright future. Also, the perspective of the camera is from a downward view, which very often is a technique that portrays the subject as a hero. Along with that, there are several other characteristics that explain how the subject, the manly figure, is depicted as a hero. These include the gun the man is lifting up high, and the notable shape of the man's mouth. A gun, like all weapons, is a significant symbol which in most of the times, represents boldness, manliness, and most importantly heroism; moreover, the gun in this advertisement holds symbols more than only heroism as it is a typical gun in the American army, M16-A3. Also, the shape of the man's mouth is recognizable as it is opened wide, looking almost like the man is shouting. Shouting, in all cases and particularly in the army represents valor and  patriotism towards one's country.

Secondly, the advertisement contains various numbers of textual features-primarily pathos, ethos, and logos-which each is established significantly. Throughout the text, it is clearly written that the advertisement targets toward people of young age and people who seek to have business backgrounds. However, the way in which this is established is instituted through pathos, an emotional approach. For example, there is a repetition in the pattern and structure in which 2 sentences are structured as they both start with  'Qualities', putting an emphasis on the positive qualities of joining the army and serving the country. On top of this, pronouns, which appeals to emotion as they leave a room of opportunity for the audiences, are employed deliberately. For instance, pronouns like 'they','you' and 'we' are quite often used throughout the text, which are considered to be personal pronouns, and they functions to evoke emotion of brotherhood and loyalty. With pathos, there are ethos and logos. Though they aren't as frequent as pathos, there is a reason to this. Because the advertisement is from the US army, a highly certified group, there isn't a reason to why credibility needs to be approved.

Lastly, I want to discuss about the further and also implied  purpose of this advertisement. As I mentioned first, the explicit purpose seems like it is to advertise the US army and to recruit more soldiers. But why? Is it just to recruit soldiers to reinforce the country's defense? Or is it to reinforce an army of elsewhere? Perhaps, I believe that, considering the current involvement of the US army in the middle east, the intention of this advertisement it to dispatch soldiers to reinforce its army in the middle east. This isn't just an assumption, but is a result of a precise observation. By looking at the color of the costume which the man is wearing, a mixture of brown and yellow, it is presumable that is purposely made to camouflage to the context, which looks like a random place in a desert.

Reflecting on my presentation

What main appeals did you use in your pitch? Why did you decide they would be the most effective?
After a thorough discussion with my group members, we decided to choose 2 main appeals, bandwagon and adventure, to advertise New York University to a global market. We thought these 2 appeals would be the most adequate, yet the most effective appeals.

First, Bandwagon appeal is the argument that says you should do it, because everyone else is doing it and they enjoy it. A very close example of this is peer pressure; it is like when your friends buy the latest smartphone, you want it too. Many significant advertisements, both printed and media-incorporated, make use of this appeal advantage outstandingly well. There are 2 different bandwagons from I have spotted while analyzing advertisements: one which presents celebrities or any sort of renowned  person of a certain fields in a lavish and pretentious fashion;one that displays the common-average people  in an unostentatious and sympathetic fashion. In spite of the fact that employing the latter would be more effective and suitable to advertise our product, NYU, as it is a humanitarian product, our group decided to pioneer an innovative advertisement by choosing the prior. However, we decided to incorporate some of the components of the latter (common-average people) by selecting a celebrity that exhibits amiable and unpretentious nature that could utilize the bandwagon appeal without evoking disenthusiasm among the audience.

Secondly, to support the bandwagon appeal, we decided to appeal for adventure. Appeal for adventure is a method of advertising which shows the potential enjoyment that is awaiting in the future rather than its explicit functions or benefits. An example of this is how a number of universities advertise their schools. Instead of revealing the benefits such as good faculty and facility, they accentuate the different experience one could come across from those benefits. Therefore, our product, being NYU, decided to do the same thing.
What were some specific persuasive techniques you used (include examples) why did you believe these would be effective?

For my pitch, I mainly employed 2 persuasive devices, scientific claims, The big lie and repetition. Scientific claims because I used scientific and statistical data to show to what extent has  NYU been so successful. However, I revealed more of the flaws and failures than the successes and achievements to evoke need for improvement among the audiences. This process could be somewhat a 'Big lie' as it required a small amount of exaggeration as well as hype. Moreover, a number of repetition was employed which functioned to show confidence and enthusiasm of the pitch. I thought these 3 persuasive techniques would be the most effective ones because they were suitable to my role as a person who had explain the intended audience, purpose and the medium from which the advertisement is projected. On top of this, because I was the first one to go from my group, I had to exhibit confidence and enthusiasm to appeal to my audience.

How did an awareness of audience and context influence your overall approach to this activity?

To be critical, I had a very week understanding and awareness of my audience and context. The audiences were high school students who are willing to go to college, parents with high school students, students with high income, and passion for learning. With this knowledge in mind, I had to consider all different variables that could affect the audiences such as the platform, celebrity, etc. Along with this, the context had a significant impact on the way in which I approached this activity. Because the context was global market, I did not have a firm idea of how to approach to make the product appealing to the global market. If the context was more narrowed into a particular country or a city, it would have been easier as it would have required understanding of that community. However, the context being much spacious and unlimited, it required understanding of diverse and extensive understanding of different cultures and communities. Unfortunately, my superficial and shallow understanding of this was projected in the way I articulated my opinion.

If you were to complete this presentation again, what would you do differently in terms of content and preparation?

I would take this assignment more seriously and consider it as a practice that could lead up to more things just than grades. Because presentations are one of my many weaknesses I am exposed to, I should devote more time than others. Additionally, I will try to rehearse with my group members more frequently. The lack of number of rehearsals led to me to mumble and my ideas to jumble up. Next time when I prepare for another presentation, I should organize what I should say in my head and try my best to consolidate the knowledge rather than to memorize it with shallow understanding.

Mercedes Benz Advertisement

Intended audience
-Intended audience are the general public. This is because throughout the video, there was barely any ongoing conversation. By this, it is recognizable that the advertisement is appealing to the general public, marketing their product and electrify those people to buy their products. Moreover, the audience specifically delivers a message that one can never be lost when one rides a Benz. This isn't explicitly displayed, but it is noticeable from the general theme of the advertisement: A young boy getting lost and policeman helping the boy get back home by Benz
To what extent Pathos, Ethos, and logos are presented
Pathos: Throughout the video, there is a number of visual pathos, rather than audible pathos. By selecting a young boy as the protagonist of the advertisement, this establishes many things. For adults, it arouses nostalgia and compassion, In particular, this impacts on adults who have children. Like in the video, where a young boy goes on an adventure without informing his parents at midnight, parents with kids have a high possibility of paying attention and being sucked into the video as they wouldn't want the same thing happening to their children. Moreover, when the policeman and the young boy set their feet on the car (Benz), the camera is zoomed onto their faces, putting an emphasis on how comfortable and pleasant it is to ride a Benz.
Ethos and Logos: They aren't used in this advertisement because Benz is a renowned company and has gained popularity from its reliability.

Letter to the Editor

As seen in the original article from Yale, It satirically disparages the misuse of English by comparing people who can break syntax rules to people who do not follow rules of proper English. If that is the case, what exactly is proper English? Is it what you intellectuals refer as ‘Educated English’? In my opinion, different regional differences in English are just not ‘colorful’ but also ‘proper’.  According to one of the examples you pointed out, comparing English to History and arguing that not every interpretation of history is correct, English is an immutable fact, which cannot be manipulated nor developed; however, this is genuinely wrong.  If English were to be History, it should have a result of open-ended consequences.  And I say these consequences are different kinds of English-comprising syntax, phonology, and etc.

In the Land of Oz, there were diverse people with diverse characteristics. And “Bad English” or “Uneducated English” should be one of those characteristics!  By exploiting these characteristics at the finest and respecting these characteristics, the Wicked Witch of the West will fall and everlasting peace will descend upon Yale.

Furthermore, these developed so-called different English(es) aren’t just rule-broken English(es). Instead, they encompass and exhibit their own specialty of having different grammatical logic and structure to incorporate meanings. For instance, the AAVE (African American Vernacular English) has amassed praise-worthiness by its significance in expressing their sorrow of slavery and occupation through its different grammatical logic and structure. Thus, I recommend that it is now time to create a change in stubborn English; this could be only achieved by causing a crack in rules of “Standard English” bit by bit and consequently causing a subversive earthquake

Memoir #5

What am I

It was then when I had to move from a country in which I had been perfectly adapted to live, Indonesia, so strongly bonded that I was scared to move out to Korea. However, I had no choice but to do so. At the center of my brain, it was full of anxiety and pressure that I had to make new friends and start a new life all over again. And at the exact center, there was an inevitable question that led be to ask my identity: What am I?

When arrived in Korea, everything seemed to be not as bad as I thought. I felt the boiling Korean blood overwhelming my Indo-English blood, starting to find hints and answers to my internal question.

At home, I spoke Korean with my mom and often spoke English with my dad and brother. and of course, my mom wasn't very supportive about that. "Can you please stop talking in English?" said my mom very grudgingly in her 'perfect' Korean. But knowing that this was the only sanctuary where I was given freedom of speech, I replied back in my 'imperfect Korean' "Sorry mommy, me feel better speak English".

Despite my 'imperfect Korean' or even 'Korglish', she seldom reflected her annoyance and worry that I could be teased or segregated. Instead, she supported and encouraged my Korean. However, when she did, she often said "Kyu, you can't speak English outside; there will be almost no one that could understand you. You really need to work on your Korean.". But I did not know what it meant or believed it.

On the first day of school, I was a man of up and down but still had not answered the inevitable question: What am I?

As I first stepped into the classroom with the new teacher, she introduced me to rest of my battle troop. “Hello children, we have a new student today! His name is Kyuweon Beom and It has not been long since he came back from Indonesia. To be a good student, you know what to do.”

This part was not too bad but what the subsequent sentence what choked me. “So Kyu, do you have anything to say to your new classmates” I knew I didn’t have to say anything but I also knew that this was an opportunity that I would never find again.

“Anyoung haseyo” I said in my imperfect Korean

Everyone was giggling about my Korean even including the teacher.

“Why is you laughing to?” I said in a bit annoyed tone

Everyone giggled in even higher pitch. The inevitable question started to wander not only in my brain but in my boiling vein. And soon, the question started to echo unceasingly. "What am I, what am I, what am I”

After that echo, nothing that my friends or teachers said was absorbed in me.

When I got back home, I told my mom the “humiliating” story of mine in my imperfect Korean. Unlike other people at school, she dived into a deep pool of thoughts and consideration as if she had done something not right.

“Kyu, I think I made a huge mistake. I’m sorry” said my mom.

Not knowing why I asked my mom innocently staring her in my pure pupils “Why mom?”

My mom answered in such static tone, “In Korean, we have what’s called a ‘Polite form’. To elaborate, we use different expressions depending on who we are conversing with. For example, you don’t say ‘anyoung’ to elders but also you don’t say ‘anyoung haseyo to your peers or people of younger age.”
It was then when I realized my mistake. I murmured “Oh shoot.”

At the same moment, I started to notice myself internally welcoming the beauty of Korean language although what was expressed externally was a total contrast.

After stepping into the combat against the Korean language with one supporter behind my back, I was valor and ready to confront more battles and dungeons as there were footprints leading me out of the enigmatic labyrinth—Who am I

Blog Post #4 Opinionated Blog Post

In the story, Tan indicates a situation where her friends do not understand her mom's English but Tan herself does. And she even indicates that it happens occasionally. Does that mean her English has been more influenced by her mom? or does that mean it has been more influenced by her peers who are mostly English-Fluent?

Here is my question. which of the two groups do you think it is more influential on your language? Peers or Family?

In my opinion, peers impact your language development than your families by some reasons

First of all, history has revealed the importance of friends/peers more than it did of families. This means that as the world modernized, people became very busy working and lost their free times that they used to have. This phenomenon also spread among students which led them to make more friends in schools and different communities but led them to deviate away from their family relationships.

Image result for time use for high school students
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/536843218056974677/

This evidential image shows how average high-schoolers mostly spend their time of the day. As seen in this image, the total hour's students stay at their homes are around 4.5 hours excluding sleeping time whereas hours spent at schools are around 6. Most certainly, there are variations among every student: Some might spend more time at schools or some might spend more time at home. However, according to the pie chart above, the majority of the students spend at schools where their peers are waiting for them. And since they spend more time with their peers than family, they are more influenced by the ways their peers use.

Second, the 'ubiquitous world' brought an immense upon language development of students. Ever since the SNS (Social Networking System) was introduced, the communication between people improved. Hence, mostly influencing the teenagers who are most adaptable to 'new technologies'. Through the use of SNS, teenagers or students have spent more time with their friends because they have been able to access with their peers neglecting time, place, or any other conditions. And since time is always constant, it requires a loss of something in order to fulfill the other. As a result, time spent with their families has been sacrificed as an opportunity cost for time spent with their peers

After all, this phenomenon will be continuous for the next 10 years and 100 years or even more. As the world develops, people will be more occupied with diverse friends than their families which I see it as an opportunity a 'diversity of language'

Blog Post#3 Significance of my name

My name (Kyuweon Beom) is derived from a Chinese background. Long time ago one of my Chinese ancestors moved into Korea and settled there until my generation.

One significance about Korean names is that many people share the same family name. For example, many of you might have seen a lot of Koreans with the family name of Kim, Park, Lee and etc. This is because people  with these family names were the most influential and strong force throughout Korea, leading them to make more descendants. On the other hand, my ancestors were not as strong or influential as names above. As a result of this weakness, it is very not common to find a person who has the family 'Beom'.

and Another significance about my name is that since my ancestors were Chinese, our family always used Chinese letters to express our names and injected a meaning to it. The meaning of my name goes like this

Kyuweon Beom (源)
Beom (虎) : Represents Tiger. (Usually Family names are just a tradition which doesn't include much meaning)

Kyu (規): Meaning 'Laws' or 'Rules'

Weon (源) : Meaning 'Origin'

If each letter is combined, it represents 'Origin of Rules/Laws' representing righteousness and moralism.

This reflects my identity in 3 different aspects
Personal: When I interact or communicate with people, I have a certain boundary I should never cross which includes inoffensiveness and disrespect. Also, I always keep on aware of things I should be aware of when talking to people. Specifically, I try not to pick on their weaknesses.
Interactional: Because I am currently a student, son, and a expat of UAE at the same time, there are certain rules and laws I should not break.

Blog Post #2 Cultural Markers

In this second blog post, I'm going to discuss mainly about 'Culture' and how this significant in this world in terms of communication.

To start off, of many cultural communities, I think I am strongly bonded to the Korean community as well the Christian community. Both communities have cultural markers that people mostly misunderstood. Here are some examples

Korean Community
-We are not innately developed at math
-Not all male Koreans learn how to do taekwondo (the most prominent and traditional martial arts in Korea)
-We do eat Dog Meat & We do not eat Dog Meat <Since this is a very interesting topic, I will discuss it later>

Christian Community
-Not everyone with the Cross on his or her body as a decoration is a Christian (Tattoo, Necklace, etc)
-We do not hate other religious groups

Of these 2 groups which I am associated with, I want to consider myself more of the Korean community because that is where I am mostly dived into.

Now, I want to elaborate the points I made above through knowledge and background I have of the Korean culture.
-We are not innately developed at math:
This would be the most stereotypical marker that people have against not only Koreans but Asia in general. But, to put things straight-forward, we 'Koreans' and 'Asians' weren't born talented at math. It is just that our academic standards and curriculum have shaped us that way; To survive from this savage war, we have adapted ourselves by working hard. So I would say it is not very adequate for other people to it is not fair as this is the consequence of our efforts.
*Also, not every Korean or Asian is a fan of numbers

-Not all Koreans learn how to do Taekwondo:
Despite its accuracy, it is very true that Taekwondo is by far the most popular "sports" among Koreans, particularly parents. But why parents? Does that mean Parents learn how to do Taekwondo? Perhaps, some parents might actually learn Taekwondo. But what I'm trying to point out is different; It is not parents who are the doers, it is the children of those parents. Taekwondo has acquired its popularity for its ornate movements. But more than this has been its consumption of energy, which would definitely attract parents who are willing to make their children exercise. However, the story has changed  for the past 3-5 years as the popularity of internet and games soared significantly. The number of children has decreased but the number of children signed up for game websites has increased.
Therefore, this cultural marker is somewhat true but wrong.

-We do eat Dog meat & We do not eat Dog meat
This marker might be the topic that has been mostly discussed not only around the world but in Korea as well. The reason why I said that Koreans do consume and do not consume Dog meat is because this is apparently the best answer I can provide.

First of all, there are 2 groups with distinct beliefs which these pursue different things. One side being the supporting group of consumption of Dogmeat and other being the opposite. To identify the difference between these groups, the group which supports the consumption of Dog meat is mostly united by people of old age who have been keeping this tradition as a habit. On the other hand, the opposing group is congregated by the younger generation who has been largely influenced by the social media. Due to this, consumption of Dog meat has been one of the most controversial and never-ending debate.  Although this controversy has lasted for years and decades, I predict that this controversy will end in the next 10-20 years the winner being the opposing group.

The reason for this claim is due to an unavoidable phenomenon which reduces the number of people from the supporting group of consumption of Dogmeat: Death. But at the same time, the number of people of the opposing group is vastly increasing day by day which leads to the game to be unfair. Consequently, due to this factor, the controversy will end when the current older generation gets replaced by the newer generation.

Surprisingly, the 'World News' reports that the percentage of consumption among Koreans has decreased from around 20% to 5% of the entire population for the last 10 years and clearly states that the percentage will decrease even by a bigger scale.
*I am one of the opposing people
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Questions to answer:
How is cultural marker important to you and your cultural group?
Cultural marker is important because it is what represents me or the group I am associated with. In most occasions, a cultural marker of a group is something that the group especially values of. So when a cultural marker is misunderstood by others, this could be an offense to the cultural group.

How can understanding cultural markers promote better communication?
If one has a decent amount of knowledge of the cultural marker of the person or people who one is talking to, one can know what things to avoid when addressing, which can be an upside for both sides as it allows them to open their minds. This understanding of cultural markers is mostly visible in advertisements because the marketer or promoter of the advertisement needs to know what kind of characteristics/markers of the target culture he or she needs to employ to bring success in that cultural group.

Blog post#1 Who am I?

04/09/15
Hello, my name is Kyuweon Beom and is a student of Raha who decided to undertake the IB curricular program.  This was a difficult decision for me to choose, but I was able to foresee the benefits I could acquire through this challenge and this was the final kick that led me to shoulder the IB.  I think this is where my attribute intervenes. I have had many occasions where I was given 'challenging tasks'; However, with my nature of optimism, I have triumphed those tasks and  shaped what I am now.  Now, the IB is another untypical mission I have been provided to overcome. Truly, It will most likely be difficult and agonizing, but It will also be rewarding.

My Goal of this year is to achieve the grades I am targeting for; Particularly for English, I am desiring to put my best effort and achieve successful grades in response. This will lead up to a better understanding of the English language, which will not only help me in English class but also in other classes as I read different kinds of text types. Last of all, I would expect myself to update posts every once in 2 days related to what I have learned in those 2 days.

To look at a bigger picture; In other words, to think of my dream in the future, I want to find a job or things that I could really enjoy. This is because, in my opinion, enjoyment doubles up your passion and your doubled up passion leads to be more productive.

For today's blog post, I will be answering questions that were given in English class.
-What roles does language have in your life?
In our life, language has been used in every single moment of our life, ever since we were born.  We all were babies once in our lifetime. Although we weren't able to deliver our through proper words when we  since our biological systems weren't developed enough to meet those functions, our parents understood our wants by observing sign language and baby talk.  Through this example, I could conclude that Language is a communicative system that not only it comprises 'Vocal Sounds', but also 'Sign and Gestures' and moreover 'Written symbols'

Since I answered the question of what languages are, I would want to refer back the question. I believe that language has its role of functioning this world. For example, language is what distinguished the 'Good' and 'Bad'. Without this distinction, life won't be the 'life' we are now experiencing anymore and it will be chaotic. So my point is that Language is like a promise or rule made by people that allowed this world to remain this way.

-Why do you think it is important to study language
This question is probably the easiest question to answer. As I have mentioned before, Language has its role of functioning this world. One function of Language is the connection. Because language has existed, people were able to connect to one another; However, If language had not existed, people could not have shared thoughts and innovated this world. Eventually, Language is what conducted this world to develop and it will do the same in the future too. So, to make this world a better place, the study of language will be the flesh and bone

-Have you ever felt excluded due to language barriers?
Certainly, I have. I want to give a very extraordinary example for this question. To draw out the setting, it happened in a museum when I was back in Indonesia. In the museum, there were few scientists and psychologists who were preparing for an experiment to see a mouse's reaction when targeted by a predator, a gigantic python in this case. When I spotted this horrendous scene, I was yelling at the mouse to flee away from the python. I tried everything to achieve this-orally, and gesturally. However, the mouse could not comprehend my 'language' and was incompetently busy consuming seeds. Then, in a snap of a finger, the mouse was gone in a place where we all can anticipate.  Therefore, through this example, I want to claim that 'language barriers' apply to not only between humans but also among other creatures.
